Lake Mapourika
Overview
Lake Mapourika is located on the West Coast of New Zealands South Island. It lies just to the north of the majestic Franz Josef Glacier and empties into the Okarito lagoon. This lake is the largest of the powerful West Coast Lakes and interestingly, is a glacier formation from the latest ice age. Since the water from glacier melts no longer drains in the lake, it is filled with fresh rain water which runs through the surrounding forest floor. The wind of the area sweeps high above the mountains, and doesn’t disturb the water and in turn beautifully reflects the forest that lay on the fringe of the lake.
